Love this place. Best room ANYWHERE in Seattle. A converted funeral home.
Please bring back The Epochs & LOOK ALIVE! We need more DJ's like that....not the house and techno crap.
I ventured out to Capital Hill on a busy Friday night and this place was crazy busy. I loved the crowd (straight n gay alike), food, service....everything was great. I definately would come here again. What a fabulous place to have a classy joint.

The Chapel.
I have been there a few times. I don't remember my first time, as it was on my twenty-first birthday and I puked all over someone in the bathroom (sorry!) but that's been quite some time.
They couldn't possibly remember me from my younger days, could they?
Because the last time I went the waitress was a complete bitch.
The height of the bad service was when my friend and I ordered a hot, fancy drink to share. I chose the only hot drink on the menu that DIDN'T contain coffee. This is because I hate coffee. A lot. The slightest taste of coffee makes me gag. That's just the way I am.
Of course, after this cold, cold woman brings our drink, we take sips. I swear there is coffee in it. I can (gaggingly) taste it. I check the menu to see if there is anything that I have overlooked. No, something is wrong.
I ask the waitress if there is coffee in the drink. She says yes. I say "Oh, it didn't say that on the menu." She looks at the menu. I say "I really don't like coffee." She says "Oh. There's just a little bit."
What the fuck. I don't even like a LITTLE bit of coffee.
Luckily when she came back my friend who ordered it with me asked for a new one. She made us a new, different drink.
It's not that she fucked up on the order. It's that she was COMPLETELY unapologetic and didn't even offer to replace it until we asked her. This was representative of her service for the whole night.
Other than that, the replacement drink I had was COMPLETELY tasty. Yum yum. The prices are pretty fancy, which would be worth if the service was better. Maybe next time.

When we first walked in, I thought, "ah shit, we're in one of THOSE places". Despite the techno-esq music, we managed to get a drink and headed onto the patio, which is amazing! The heat lamps were perfect and it was just comfy out there. After a while, I was less put off by the techno stuff and started to look around the place while I waited to order the delish cucumber kamikazes. When you know that it is an old morgue and look at things, it's pretty amazing. So I'll forgive the music.
The next time we went, there was nowhere to sit outside, so we headed upstairs, and HOLY COMFY LOUNGEY COUCHES! We proceeded to get drunk in the comfort of ridiculously low-backed chaise couch things. Oh and there are poles up there? I don't know why, but that can't be good. Especially for me, because I'm bound to make a fool of myself (I think I might have actually but was too drunk to care).
This bar caught me off guard. I didn't know if I'd like it, but it wasn't too shabby after all.

When I moved to Capitol Hill, I thought it was a hip town (well, now I saw different parts of Cap Hill and I still love the uniqueness of the town!). People dress nice and smell good here...and Chapel is just what it's like to be living on the Cap Hill. Nice techno music, very fancy cocktails...it's just totally different from the sports bars I usually go! It gets crowded on the weekend, but once you find seats, it's too comfortable to get up...my goal is to try all the cocktails on the menu...they are seriously good :)

Gosh this is a pretty spot. I'm such a sucker for design and layout.
But the bar is awfully high. Lil' old me needed a sherpa to clamber up on a barstool.
The drink menu was AMAZING, and (again, maybe my perspective is skewed because I'm from LA) cheap as hell for some pretty beverages.
Friendly staff, although the new barteder guy from MA mumbles all his words so I felt like a tool repeatedly saying "What? What?" as he tried to chat me and my friend up.
The chick was cool though.
Downside: they close at midnight on Sundays. The website didn't indicate this so they were already calling last call when we arrived.
Great drinks.
We arrived at 7 - an hour before the end of the happy hour and still only got 1-2 drinks a piece.
Opted to go to Quinn's for dinner instead, because the menu pretty much sucked for the prices.
The topper was when we got the bill. Despite the $5 cocktails, five of us cost $71. On my birthday. Oh, but the kicker was the 20% mandatory gratuity ...for five?
I have never seen five, six is fine, but five?

I've been here a few times. My wife had a birthday gathering here a couple of years ago and we had fun. The waiter at the time was very attentive, and drinks were to her liking, (wouldn't know I'm a beer and shots guy).
So last night I had my three year anniversary dinner here for my staff. We chose the place because of the upstairs area and the ambience. Also we drink like fish and tend to carry on a bit when we go out ( you really can't take us anywhere, it's ridiculous).
The first ten minutes nary a soul ventured up to see if we wanted anything, which I thought was absolutely bizarre. I wondered if they even wanted a party of eleven drinking and eating and spending money (there was hardly anybody in the place). I went up and got my own beer (minus ten fucking stars) and opened a tab, requesting that we get a waiter. Apparently, as was explained to us the waiter was brand spankin' new, fresh out of the box.
We popped his waiter cherry.
We worked that guy with drink orders every ten minutes and appetizers and food. He did well, was prompt and did not fuck up any of our drink or food orders. The food was excellent, I had one of the best grilled cheese sandwiches I've ever had (gruyere and rustic bread), my chicken fried chicken was excellent and we had a couple of rounds of some foo foo shots that were actually pretty damn delicious.
Good save.
I'll go back, I like this place. A little attitude, but this is the hill.

I LOVE Chapel. I really loved it for its cheap martini's, fun little snacks and the creative venue.
I am knocking two stars off for the bitchy service we recieved when we had a party there. Honestly, I should knock off more than two but I'm feeling generous today. It was my girl's 30th birthday, and we reserved the upstairs on a Sunday (I think) from 5-8. We told the bartenders we didn't need a server b/c only one card (or cash) has to be used in that manner and we were sure our friends would forget, and WE didnt want to get stuck with a $200 bill. So, making it easier on us and the house, we agreed to trek downstairs to get our drinks. That meant everytime having to remember your purse if you were a girl, and they continues to re-card everyone over and over and over... even though we'd just come down to retrieve another drink less than 30 minutes ago. Rediculous! And when we tried to get more than one drink at a time (to save ourselves a trip) it was "against the rules" of happy hour and we weren't allowed. Jesus. The girl at the bar was an awful bitch, and I stopped buying drinks right then and there. No more of my money FOR YOU. Thanks.
You'd think if we bring you 20+ people averaging 5 drinks a person (we hang with boozers) at $5 a pop thats AT LEAST $400 just from one party. Be a little polite!
And just to rub the salt in our wounds a little bit more, they decided to give us shit for having a birthday cake. "No outside food...blah blah blah"
A. It was homemade. Its not like we patroned another joint, and brought that shit in.
B. We used all our own utensils and plates. No hassel for the house.
C. We cleaned up after OURSELVES! We didnt leave anything behind.
The only reason they even knew is b/c we asked if there was a large receptacle we could throw the bag away in, and the server was a dick.
I don;t care how popular an estabilshment is, you should never be assholes to your customers. Thanks to Yelp that shit will get around.

Simply put, Chapel makes the best drinks in Seattle. Wtih real juice purees, house infused vodkas, and a $5 martini happy hour, it can't get any better. The coconut and color purple are both heaven. I like happy hour during the week, but avoid Saturday nights due to a huge crowd and long wait for drinks.

MORTUARY GONE BAR!
My friends introduced me to this place. Everything back in Seattle has become new to me since I've been gone for some time. I didn't know what to expect when they called it "the chapel" and how they describe it as "the old church". BUT it's not even a church, it's a MORTUARY. How in the world do you soak up kicking it in a bar scene but the place was once a damn mortuary. Vintage building, modern decor?!
We went in and was seated. I scoped the place out and said "its kind of gothic but I like it." The ambiance and decor reminded me of swanky New York lounge meets a Century old Europen church seen on TV. I don't even know it that makes any sense but that's what my first impressions were. That or either they can't make up their mind if they want to go modern or stay vintage.
I had a bloody mary and it was extremely delicious. One of the best blood mary's I've had.
I definately see myself coming back to this place to just hang out and grab some good drinks.

I did take a taste of Anthony's appletini, DAMN strong drink!
I'd be down for an Elite event or a themed night HH here anytime!

The after-party for the Elite Event @ The Crimson C last night was here, and what a location! I was told it was a converted mortuary, and it certainly looked the part. You remember that scene in Sixth Sense, where Haley Joel Osment is taking a piss and the air gets so cold you can see his breath - and then all of a sudden a figure flashes across the screen behind him? Yeah. I swear it felt like that in the men's room - I was convincing myself this was the converted "meatlocker" and that I could smell the stench of formaldehyde and cold death. *ahem*
Goth feeling interior, dimly lit throughout - good music, not too loud but not loud enough to feel like a dance-club. It's definitely a lounge. Impressive array of mixed drinks on the menu if you aren't able to come up with your own libation. -1 star for the 5' tall bar that made me feel like a midget when ordering. LoL Otherwise....perhaps a good location for a future Elite event???

The annoying pretentiousness of this bar is (almost) made up for by its happy hour, when the truly great martinis are 1/2 price and the tasty food is cheap too. I've never experienced overtly rude service here but then again I have been a bartender and am generally unfriendly and therefore I do not want nor expect chattiness and/or smiles when I am trying to drink my pain away, thanks. It's nice and dark with ambient-techno atmosphere music and a large covered patio for smoking. I don't suggest staying past happy hour though, as both the prices and asshole quotient skyrocket.

Very, very delicious blood orange mojito something-or-other (I thought I ordered a martini, but the mint and the glass led me to believe I actually ordered a mojito). It was darn good. I like the Panton S-chairs and those are not only comfy to sit in, but genius since basically you can hose them down.
I can't see coming here too much (I'm feeling my old) but I can see enjoying it for people-watching. Like the daddy-hunter couple at the bar -- not anything wrong with that, just fun to watch.
Our server was wearing an engineer's cap and despite this, I liked him.
ETA: After our drink we started to wind down and decided to call it a night. Making our way back to the car I'm thinking, "Wow, I wonder what time it is?" Well, it was 10 freaking p.m. So like I said -- old. I accept and embrace that.

Back in the day, Chapel used to be one of my regular Happy Hour hangouts. All their delicious martinis were $4, and they had a pretty good selection of $5 -$7 plates - including a really good burger + fries - plus, the service was great! We loved, loved, loved our wait staff.
Then things started changing - the waiters got worse (sometimes it took almost an hour to get a check), they subbed in Tim's chips for fries, took away about 1/2 the HH menu, and just generally lost most of their appeal. I recently checked the web site and noticed the martinis are up to $5 each. That's still a good deal , esp. considering the amount of alcohol in those things - but $4 was cheap, cheap, cheap!
I still adore how the place looks - dark, cozy, & impressive (LOVE that they kept many of the Mortuary details). I might go back occasionally just to have a "Pink" martini or their Rosemary-infused vodka, and their menu now looks a lot more interesting - but, I no longer count it as favorite for boozing.

Love the atmosphere and how it use to be an old funeral home.
Drinks were yummy, but pricey. When I happened to go this past March while visiting Seattle the crowd was older and we really only stayed for one drink and decided to move on. It was alright for the time being, but maybe it was an off night.
Chapel can be a hit and miss kind of place for me. Half the time I go there it's me, my crew and four other people the other half of the time I can barely squeeze in.
I love it when it's empty. The servers actually smile, the music is great and so is the atmosphere. Love love love it. And who doesn't love a delicious lavender martini or a perfect strawberry-rhubarb martini? yum yum yum.
When it's packed, however, the servers barely notice you until you grab them and then take forever with your drinks. And forget about lining up at the bar! Who wants to wait for 20 minutes when you are wearing 3 inch heels and the bartender is ignoring you?
The rosemary chips are yum to nosh on, but the crab cakes are horrible and not worth the $16 for two small and mushy lumps. Their drink menu, however, saves them every time.
Try to hit this spot on a slow night in order to enjoy
I will always patronize Chapel even though the staff is rude and the service is slow.
The $4... oops now $5 happy hour martinis are awesome and whenever I'm in the mood to get tipsy between 5 and 8 on a weekday Chapel is the first place that comes to mind.
I just love to sit 85 feet off the ground in their gigantic bar stools, sipping on a surprisingly delicious infused monarch vodka concoction, enjoying the beautiful old mausoleum and trendy music while laughing at how full of himself the bar tender is.
I'm actually totally serious.. I love this place and I'm glad that I have a few friends that haven't been completely turned away by the snobby employees.

The perfect combination to a metro/hip club on Capitol Hill in Seattle.
The mirrors lining the wall give the impression that this place is bigger than it really is, but they make room at 9 pm for dancing and standing. The mac and cheese is great, but at $10 a dish, enjoy sparingly. The drinks were good. I had the Maui Mojito on a hot Seattle day (very rare, I know). It had banana liquor and it was tasty.
This is the kind of place I would want to go to before 9 pm rolls around on a Friday or Saturday. A great place to enjoy a couple of drinks with friends, but I can only imagine the atmosphere once the clubbers starting pouring in.
Oh and the bouncer that comes at 9 pm was a skinny, emo, headphone wearing kid. My 5'0" girlfriend could have beat him up.
The sacrilegious atmosphere at this place was pretty good, and the bartender not only failed to flinch when I ordered a caipirinha, actually made it well. The music wasn't too loud, either, but then I was there before the hours when it would really get thumping. It was comfortable, too, and seemed to have a pretty good mix of people. I would go back the next time I was in town (or that part of it, anyway).

-a great martini happy hour
-beautiful gays
-booming techno tunes
-darkness
-pretty delicious treats
and are willing to put up with all of the following:
-declining modern decor
-the age old stench of mortuary goodies
...the the Chapel is for you!! I venture here on occasion when I'm craving the taste of something new. Their extensive martini bar and fresh juices keep me coming back despite the fact that certain corners of the bar smell like... urinal? (I'm told they can't get rid of the smell that lingers from when this place was a funeral home).

The best thing about this place is me sitting in and fantasizing how its dark morbid ex-mortuary history/interior would look great with my furniture.
Otherwise, the food can be tasty, albeit pricey; which can also be said about the drinks. The tall bar itself is fun, in the fact that it makes me feel like a little kid sitting in the grown up's world and sneaking sips from my parent's drinks when I was like 4. Wait, you didn't start your drinking career when you were 4? Damn

The four star is an exaggeration only because this place is brilliant in it's conception. Hey, let's take out an old mortuary and turn into a place where people can indulge in alcohol... why not.
It's kind of genius.
The scenery inside is utterly sexy no matter where you look at it, from the hot tatted-up bartender, to the spacious and delicious bathrooms and to the tall bar that gives you that eerie feeling when you prop yourself on the chair.
I haven't tried food here, it didn't look too good when I went - but the martini menu is something to explore and they have many many infused vodkas. People will say martinis are expensive here, but they are pretty standard to me... if you are that martini drinker you might see what I am talking about.
A bit scenester but not too entirely, the crowd has some of the most gorgeous people in Seattle I'd say. And gorgeous is defined anywhere from that raging lesbian who has that mullet dyke haircut to the gay boy exploding with color or the androgynous tatted up Seattle kid.
God bless the chapel.

I have mixed feelings about this bar. Its not really in my top places I'd like to hang out in but its not bad either. The old church turned morgue turned bar is an interesting transformation. The balcony where the choir would have been is a good lounge area and can be reserved for private parties. I had my very first drink here when I turned 21, but I was overcharged. The drink was good but that was a bad first impression on their part. But yet I come back from time to time.
Head over for happy hour if you're looking for good martini specials at $5 a drink (it used to only be $4). I can't say the same for the food however. I got a free drink from a server once. I suggest coming early if you want the drink specials because it can get crowded and you'll find yourself hunting for seats. The good part is that happy hour lasts until 8 pm.

chapel to me is like the guy that is kinda cute but not really that cute that is the go to guy when you're feeling a little insecure that you just want to make out with but nothing more. in other words, its the place to go when nothing else sounds enticing. great martinis (great personality) and great place to meet friends and cute boys (albeit gay). i did meet a group of hot italians... but one had really bad breath and i just stopped the conversation with the rest of the group right then and there.
oh and the three stars is because of the food. yuck. but the martinis are to die for. i suggest the pomegranate martini. yum yum in my tum tum.

We sat upstairs and got the full view of the awesome and uniquely decorated bottom floor.
We went during Happy Hour and the prices were great! I fell in love with their coconut martini -- sugared rim and just sweet enough to taste great but not make your teeth hurt. I also ordered a grilled cheese sandwich with tomato soup that was the perfect size to keep your stomach empty enough for 3 to 4 cocktails. The service was decent when we went but the server seemed a little overwhelmed so we had to flag her down a couple times.
I really recommend it!

I think there should be two ratings for this place. The one that is 5 stars because it used to be a funeral home. I have lived next to not one, but two mortuary/funeral homes and THEY never invited me in for a drink. In fact they used to glare at me when the Hearst would pull up and I would run to my window to check out the bodies coming in.
Not at Chapel Bar. They welcomed me with open arms and gave me fancy happy hour cocktails for $5 and customized them after hearing me tell my friend I wasn't a huge fan of super sweet drinks, and then the bartender eavesdropped some more and we had an interesting and depressing conversation about shootings and death which seemed fitting considering the setting. See, 5 stars.
However, the one star review is spawned by the fact that they play this crappy techno music and instead of having pews as seats, which would be totally cool and fitting, they brought in these white plastic chairs that are pretty and uncomfortable and belong in some modern loft but not in this place. Oh, and they have a bar that lights up and I have seen the clientele that light up bars attract and it ain't pretty. Plus the stools at the bar are super high and hard to get in and out of, even when this is your first stop of the evening. I can only imagine what they would be like after a few more cocktails.
So 3 stars and the hope that they revamp the decor and bring in a pipe organ or something else to scare away the yuppies.

While the specialty martinis are really tasty, the service and food are, at best, mediocre. I love the decor of the refurbished funeral home, but since the opening of Chapel a few years ago, it doesn't appear that anyone's been keeping it up. Without the cool interior, Chapel would lose a lot of its draw, especially with the icy demeanor from the wait staff/bartenders and the recent price increases to already over-priced menu items. I'll still go to Chapel because it's only a block from my apartment and the Happy Hour prices are good, but I'm as over the servers as they are of their serving responsibilities.
BTW, while the seating accommodates groups, the music is often too loud for real conversation. One time, my friends and I were the only customers and we asked them to turn the music down, and the server said she couldn't... she then walked up to the iTunes computer upstairs and changed the song. Lame!

I'm a Seattle girl who lives in LA and loves coming back to Seattle to go out. Going out in Seattle is just easier and soo much cheaper, that said... I've been to the Chapel two nights in a row, because finding a good martini in quiet bar for under $10 a drink is unheard of in LA.
I find the service to be so-so and the waitress I had tonight was much better than the snobby bartendress that helped us last night. All of that said, I'm down for the huge selection of martini's for five dollars, can't be beat.
The interior is great, dark and light at the same time, I'm a fan. BTW, last night I had the grilled cheese and tomato bisque, it was pretty good, certainly not worth $13, nowhere near the price, but split it seemed reasonable?
Tonight, we split the hamburger, which was awesome and juicy. We then split the small appetizer plate which was also pretty good and I think well proportioned to the $5 they asked.

This place has place has scrumptious drinks! Their martini list will take several visits to completely experience. So far, my favorites are the coconut and pear. I also had a very tasty lemon drop.
If you want to just hang out and catch up with friends, go earlier rather than later as the night we were there (Sat.) got crazy busy after 9.
So I was so excited to go on my first date with my Seattle crush I started a thread! I was so happy to see him on the BIG DAY but when he said we were going to the Chapel I got the wrong idea and totally wanted to run the other direction. But I'm so glad we stayed ;)
Capitol Hill reminds me so much of San Francisco. The colorful buildings, art deco establishments and the great vibe make it such an awesome neighborhood. So when he walked me to a drab old building I was having second thoughts about going in.
But as you walk in you are suddenly struck by the gorgeous lighting, fabulous decor and chill atmosphere. You realize that this isn't your average place. This bar was nice and mellow which was a good change from dive bars and pubs I had been visiting earlier. No need to scream to hear each other, no need to push others out of the way to get space. I really felt comfortable here and I couldn't imagine a better location for the big day!
The drinks are awesome. They do run from $6-$9 but they are so worth it. Happy Hour runs from 5-8 and martinis are $4. Trust me, they have so many original drinks and they are so worth! I had the cucumber martini which was so good. He also let me try his citrus martini and it was even better. It was so good I took it from him and drank the rest. Maybe that was the plan because I got buzzed on my first drink which of course led to other things.
They have your normal fare of small dishes. They are really good and perfect to go with the excellent drinks.
The place is so cozy and nice. There's also an outdoor patio which is perfect for getting fresh air. The bar sits you up high for a perfect view of the entire place. The booths and tables are a nice touch and whoever designed the establishment did an excellent job.
But my favorite place is the upstairs which gives you a perfect view of everyone below. They have a few tables and some really comfortable benches. I'm not going to tell you what happened on those benches but every time someone came upstairs they were probably shocked by what they saw and then scared off. ;) He was such an absolute gentleman though so get your mind out of the gutter.
For you curious people who wanted to know about what happened later wait for my review of the parking lot next door to Chapel. I'll give you a preview... the rate is $7 on the weekends and it was worth every penny! He may be a gentleman but I'm definitely not a man... or gentle either

Horrible Service, not kidding when I say the waiter yelled and pushed us out of the way while we were standing having a few cocktails. Hey if your having a bad day, leave it at home. The place was very pretty. But the service - the worst in Seattle. Spend your money elsewhere.
